I have to concur about the staff forgetting about the discounts.  The bar service was a bit chaotic but I think most of that was due to managing different cards and getting signatures and stuff.

Feedback / Event planning: Games - just something to consider.

Greetings,

DSCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT A MOAN!

I wanted to say this without coming across negatively (as I had such a good time) so hopefully there will be a couple of constructive points here.

1. Some descriptions of what things are would really have been a great help in the timetable.  If I was to pick one example, I would say Artemis.  I had never heard of that before and when someone told me what it was I was like OH WOW I MUST PLAY THIS!

2. The person organising such events really needs to take full control to ensure that the clueless newbies (expecially the socially awkward ones) know whats going on and feel included in the experience.  To contrast the above-mentioned with another game I played for the first time (Werewolf), the latter was really well done.  The host really made everything go smoothly, but with Artemis, I will admit to my shame that I got frustrated and walked off, simply because we were left standing in the corridor to organise ourselves into groups, and after the first bunch, everyone else just seemed to form in their various cliques - not the best situation for a socially awkward soul at their first con :P

Again, I didn't want that to sound negative.  I have no grudges or ill feelings towards anyone - I've never had such a good time in my life.  Please just look at this as a comparison between something that went well from the point of view of a terrified newbie, and something that didnt go quite as well.

Feedback / Re: What is it with the lack of chairs?
« on: May 29, 2014, 16:43:47 »
I felt really awkward after saying I couldnt help move chairs because of my arthritis - sounds like a classic bad excuse lol  (100% truth though - my knees are wrecked and I refused to go easy on them during the con - totally worth the pain though)

Didnt realise there was a new thread for this.

YES I would like to enter.
I play acoustic guitar - quite uniquely is the best way I can put it (studied jazz and classical before that but ended up in a punk band and now do mostly experimental stuff).
I've never done a solo performance, nor have I ever attended a con before so this will be a scary experience and I will require much alcohol!
As for what I want to play, options are still open but song candidates include:
 - One of my own songs if I can finish it
 - Big Love (Fleetwood Mac) crazy acoustic version
 - Bad (U2)
 - Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin) - but only if I have access to helium like maybe a glamorous assistant with a baloon ready (yes I'm dead serious)
 - One or more of the bard songs from Skyrim, or possibly a medley

And yes a rehearsal will definitely be a good thing!

Everyone loves a bit of metal :D

Unless youre really particular about your sound, you could leave out the amp - any effects pedals etc do the job of a preamp and will give you a line level signal that can go into the PA, as will a decent mixer.

I'll just have a stand-alone acoustic setup including a small home-made amp / resonator (battery powered)

Thats a good point - might be worth adding some guidelines for that (just read through the general rules and stuff again in case I'd missed something but nothing there).  I assume it would only apply to 'big' equipment operating at mains level since people use stuff like phone chargers and other low voltage plug in stuff in hotels all the time.

I'm bringing my guitar and some basic equipment (some of it home made).  What do you need minimum?  I'm sure a bunch of us could pool resources - always done that with gigs around here.  And I'm pretty sure the hotel will have a PA which will be used for announcements and stuff.  Ask the even organisers about that.
