Feedback / Feedback: this and that.
« on: July 31, 2014, 19:30:23 »
Hebbo! :D
So I figured it couldn't hurt to have another feedback thread. And hopefully get some discussions going.

The good stuff

1.The variety of events this year was brilliant :) for silly reasons I didn't get to go to many but looking at the conbook I could see that there was a focus of variety rather then fursuits like some cons :P I particularly liked the Hypnosis panel, the "X vs Y" panels and game show hosted by Jym. I didn't get to go to the Felines vs Canines panel and I was actually curious if you could maybe host a repeat next year? :)

2. The pawpet show! There was a focus on humor rather then drama this year and I think it worked for the better. I loved picking up all the little Sci-Fi references and all the characters (apart maybe from Jyms transition to Super-Serious) were entertaining ^^ I think the use of pre-recorded footage was a great idea and hope it's here to stay. (I still bust up at the Face of Tavu scene :P) And top praise goes to the opening cinematic, what a pleasent suprise :D Am I the only one that kind of wanted to be tied down by Fl00fy too? >.> just me?

3. The venue: I was a little confused by the venues layout at first but I found after a day it was easy to navigate. The food was top-grade and just what you need after subsiding on snacks foolishly for a day :P The Bar even served my fave brand of cider :D I also loved the venues pool, which I noticed was at one point host to a pooltoy meet. Gonna HAVE to find out how to get in on that :D

The bad stuff
1. The bar staff. Several of my friends and eventually myself found being served food at the bar was a very long wait. I don't know what the reason was so I won't make assumptions

2. Headless fursuiters. I know this is a massive can of worms and I'm not looking to start another argument. But I have heard from several sources in other countries that anti-magic suiters aren't as big a problem in other cons as here. I'm not saying we should strictly enforce it. But some kind of compromise should really be looked into. I understand that escapeisim and role play are not values held by every fur here, but there is a sizeable portion of the fandom that believes in these ideals. Surely we can work something out?

3. The rain.......well, can't blame the weather ponies can we? :P

Due to the obligations of my role on this convention, I am forced to splitt my reply to this into two seperate parts.

First, I'll answer officially for the security of ConFuzzled:

There can not and will not be a written rule, that a fursuiter may not take off his head in public. However, since a large number of attendees (suiters an non-suiters) felt genuily disturbed by the unusually high amount of fursuiters we will focus more on this point during beginner-panels and most likely there will be a guideline for fursuiters hanging out in the headless-lounges. Thank you for keeping this discussion polite!

Now I'd like to state my personal opinion. The following does NOT represent the opinion of ConFuzzled ltd. or any convention department!

Back in the days, there was this unwritten rule, that fursuiters never take their head off in public. That's why the headless-lounge is called headless-lounge. This is why there are rules, that allow fursuiters to run around without a badge. That's why we protect their anonymity. I'm a bit offended by people that play the "medical issue card" on this problem, since nobody would ever even get to the idea to deny someone with a medical problem (overheating, dehydration, etc.) taking his head off in public.

All the complaints were about people taking their head off without any reason at all. If you have a medical problem, you don't sit down at the bar and get drunk. Also you don't walk into the restaurant and eat a full meal in a half pulled-down fursuit. Or smoke in fursuit. That's just not what the majority of our community accepts. At many conventions, this would be softly enforced to be honest. I don't see a reason for a written rule about this, but I also don't understand those few suiters that seem to think of this to be perfectly fine. If many of those I spend a convention with tell me, they don't want to see that in public, isn't it a bit arrogant to say "I don't give a f***"? Sure as hell it should make you think.

One of the suggestions regarding the reason for such a unusual large number was, that we had a lot of first timers, and since we live in a time in which every beginner can afford at least a simple fursuit, many walked around without any experience or background knowledge.

I think that might be part of the reason. All I can say is, that in all my years at conventions I've never seen so many headless suiters in public. (Without medical reason :p) And yes, that ruined a lot of photos and videos, because you may not care how you look without your head on, but most suiters do and their photos will be ruined if there are headless suiters in the background.

Last but not least: of course it's your choice what you do with your fursuit, but the furry community is based on the "we", and not on the ego of a few.

I can agree with so much of this, as well as the the more "magical" aspect, there are many practical pointers, and I'm glad someone can see them.

It's a relief that someone else has noticed the uncaring attitude of the headless suiters, I know we are a community of tolerance and diverse views, but there IS a whiff of a disregard for others in this.

Couldn't agree with this more, Full body mirrors would be great, but there is the danger of a suiter with a big body and not much peripheral vision knocking it over (and no one likes shredded fursuit)

I'm going to break the popular trend and say I am Pro-keeping your head on. I can't help but feel the whole "we know they're just people in suits" counter argument is missing the point a little. YES we know, but we like to forget that and imagine, I find a lot of people are also very brash and cold when defending taking off their heads. A lot of people at CF seem to have this "Don't give a damn" attitude, which goes against the fandom and its general outlook, the outlook it was founded on,

Here's my two cents on the matter.

I've chatted to several furs in America and I get the evidence that it's more strictly enforced over there, many people, both high up and low down respect the idea of keeping up the illusion, People such as Uncle Kage and other noteworthy furs teach this practice to people in "first con" panels and such. So if they can do it, and have (to my knowledge) never had any adverse problems, why can't we? Confuzzled is slowly becoming one of those major cons on par with AC and EF, let's try to be more like them in terms of respecting classic furry ideals.

The argument that people will get hot and tired? I think it's fairly easy to know when you need a break. I know from experience as a fursuiter that you can get carried away, but that's one reason we have handlers and spotters, also the fandom is full of helpful furs, a simple "fanning" or "time out" hand gesture can let people know you need help to the lounge.

As for the "We know" attitude, as I said, yes we DO know, but what's the point of reality if you can't pretend? I know the current generation of furs is more detached from the spiritual aspect of the fandom, but there are still many furs, greymuzzle or otherwise that are more classically minded, and do you really want to cause a friction in a fandom devoted to acceptance and co-operation? I say that not to threaten, but to warn.

That's no good, I'm not doing early arrival, so I won't be there until Thursday :( Sure you can't have it another night for those of us who aren't doing early arrival?

There's really no time that doesn't clash with something that will draw the crowds.

Good news :D
The solution was looking me in the face the whole time. If the events are getting in the way of making a time, why not just do it on the days when there are no events? :P

So, I can now say for definite that the meet will be on the Wednesday at 22:00 right after registration has closed. There will be a flyer on the poster board (assuming con staff still allow furs to place them on there) showing the room number and any other details.

Hope to see you there!

Just a quick update.
Room is all sorted, fortunately this year I've found myself in a Triple and my roommates have no problem with me hosting it there ^^
The time on the other paw is being troublesome, I've decided to wait until the event lineup is a little more final.

It sounds like a neat idea... Lord knows I waddle like a fat penguin on a rocking boat that is also spinning on a round-about while in suit and will trip over anything that lies in front of me... but how do you actually propose to help people with that?

Part of it comes down to spatial awareness (which does seem to be an inherited trait... or at least configured very early in life), heat tolerance... claustrophobia... ability to concentrate etc.
Maybe throwing a bunch of odd-footed fursuits into a room filled with pointy objects lying on the floor might force us to learn and learn fast... but that may perhaps require an ethics form. Just maybe. :P

Lord no! O.O think of the damage to the suit paws!

I admit I hadn't thought about the specifics of the workshop, but have several vague ideas, maybe several fursuiters trying to practice movment while navigating chairs and other objects? or perhaps in groups learning how to compensate for the peripheral vision?

I think that would be something for a more experienced fursuiter to think up x.x I'm not very well versed in the art of suiting.

So there's this idea for an event I've been mulling over. Often you get fursuit workshops but they often relate to the performance aspect, How to emote, how to compose a character and that sort of thing.

But I know from experience that when you put on a fursuit for the first time the character is only one part of it, wearing a suit can be disorienting and cumbersome. So my suggestion is for a workshop that focuses on getting people comfy with basic movement and things like restricted field of vision and muffled sound.

This could be helpful for beginners who are still a little uncomfortable wearing a suit.

What do you think?

I really think this year was one of the best, So here's my pros and cons.

Pros

1. The venue itself was without a doubt the best we've had, the doorways and corridors were the perfect size for fursuiters and the layout was generally easy to naviagte even without consulting your venue map. I personally loved how much effort you put into the decoration this year, the giant oscars and clapper boards were one thing, but having a hollywood sign and flags hanging out front was above and beyond what I expected! :)

2. The included breakfast was varied and very well cooked. The small meals avalible daily were the right size to satisfy without being over kill and the small extras (such as ice creams) availible were nice option for those who didnt feel like a meal.

3. The dealers den, well what can I say? it was bigger and had much more on offer, I only got a few chances to go in but always walked out with plenty. The artists I personally feel were of high skill and the variaty of items ensured every furry base was coverd.

cons

1. This is more of problem with congoers then staff, but I noticed a fair amount of people walking around the con space with their fursuit heads off. I understand this year was particulerly warm, but I've never liked seeing headless furs (ruins the magic and such) I wonder if perhaps the reason for doing this was the distance of the fursuit lounge? either way if people could take into consideration those of us that get distressed by missing heads more, I think some people would be happier.

2. I know a lot has been said about the charity auction, so I wont repeat the same things, but I would suggest that perhaps there is a required base amount to go into charity for each picture? or that perhaps only those with high bids make it into the auction?

3. I noticed there was a stomach bug traveling around the convention, I talked with several friends and we believe we traced it to the source, apparently many furs say the fish at the BBQ tasted undercooked, and those that ate it complained of stomach pains. Here's hoping next year we have better luck.

My suggestion for people wishing to plan this party is that you consider asking someone whom has expressed interest if they have a room large enough to host - knowing the room layout, this would be either the Twin rooms or the Exutive doubles, or at this stage between those of you wishing to go, you raise £75 to host it in a party suite.

Party suite registration is formally closed now but I do have one room available for Friday still that I know the hotel would have no objection to us still filling.  If you are able to get this organised and wish to take advantage of this room, please email: partysuites@confuzzled.org.uk

Well, I've sent emails around. My next question would be if anyone here would actually donate any amount of money towards it. I'm not really keen on that idea if I'm honest, but if worst comes to worst...

I would go to this party if it happens.  Donations?

I'm hoping it will still happen, but I cant do much until I get to the con itself.
And it depends on what you mean by donations, I could possibly take money if that's what you mean.

Okay, following Levs advice I've looked into the room problem, and now what I need is a basic estimate of how many people would be interested.
Anyone at all who would consider coming if it happend, speak up :) if we dont get organised it wont happen! :P
