Title: Fursuit costs and suppliers
Post by: valebear on July 23, 2009, 01:25:04
OK so I want to get a fursuit but I'm undecided, on one hand I'd love to be a bunny if not a dog/husky.

A toony look is preferable.

Where do I start, and is buying a ready-made/used fursuit frowned upon within the furry community?

Would a commission be too expensive, besides designing it myself would be a daunting task and I would need some help.

Besides furbid where else can I look?

Checked out Fursuiters UK, but only four makers listed in the UK and all apparently fully booked.

most people do get theirs comissioned or buy off the peg suits. Of course comissions you get closer to yoru character but they are more expensive and yes all the good makers have a waiting list. If you plan on going to any of the top 20 or so makers you can expect a waiting period of 1 to 2 years (yes YEARS). The actaul making isnt more than a month or so but the waiting lists are so long.
Some makers do list a standard cost for a full suit or partial etc then charge more for additions, again from one of the top makers you can expect a minimum of around 1000 for a partial. For example Arend studios charge £999 for a partail and £1600 for a full suit, plus of course the pleasure of waiting a few years while they make another 10 suits for yag ^.^
Of course their are cheaper places too its really a case of sticking your head out there and asking people and looking at links. Alot of people that build have pages of Furafinity so you can find them there or at least who made a certain suit.

Heres a couple of links
http://www.arendstudios.de/en/index.html
http://www.donthugcacti.com/
http://www.maskottchen-germany.de/german/main.htm (Yea sorry its in german but you get the idea its easy to understand)

Atalons stuff ususally is cheaper and he can make it alot quicker than the others but he doesnt do "toony" so much as the others.

But keep looking around cause they are just examples there are many many people all over the world making top quality ones. My only advise would be try and avoid none furry commercial sites selling pre made ones. Simple because these are made for parties and small events they are no where near as good and hard wearing as ones build by furs for fursuiting.

I commissioned my partial from azurecoyote. She's on FA and her site is http://www.azurecoyote.com/

She's from the states, so you'd have to pay duty fees, but she's really resonably priced. My extended partial (head, hands, feet, tail, wings, arms and legs) cost me $600 USD.

Those prices aren't bad actually! Makes sense to shop around, though you still have to look into it properly. Doubt I'd go for a top maker, a combination of not being made of money or having enough patience ;)

Keep thinking I'll go for a full and wear a t-shirt and shorts over it, as I feel I'd be missing out with only a partial! Need to get a ref sheet done at some point I guess.

OMG the Arend fursuits are super cute and look to be worth every penny, but £1600 ouch!

Would a quality fursuit be an investment and hold it's value?

I have in the past (1998) paid £1500 on a new top of the range computer, and after 3 years it was worth about £100 if I was lucky.  :(

Nice prices and good looking work there, certainly one to consider.

I would recommend:

Arend Studios
Don't Hug Cacti
JoeciFur (B3 Mascots)
Rose Quoll

They all make good suits :)

Well yes and no, remember if a suits made for you its got a limited customer base for resale as it wont fit everyone and the character wouldnt suit everyone. Plus of course seond hand and used and all that. But they certainly dont devalue like a computer :P even rocks plumit slower than pc prices

I agree there- brilliant suits, and I'll let them know if my lottery numbers ever come up, or a rich estranged relative dies and puts me in their will ;)

I'm looking at around £1000 max myself- which would have been a lot easier if the pound's exchange rate hadn't come crashing down over the past year!

Waiting until I've at least seen some suits in RL myself before I think about it- which I probably won't have a chance until the meet in York next month- if anyone turns up with one!

Tease :P

After talking with Lev about suits I've come to the conclusion that I'd have to try one one before I ever even consider getting one.

As cute as they are they just may not be for me as the experience of wearing one simply may not be enjoyable for me [I hate being too hot (the heatwave we had a couple of weeks ago was physically painful at times and generally miserable) and I'm not someone who tends to wear hats cause the pressure of the forehead feels strange and uncomfortable. I'd really have to see if I could even stand to wear one, let alone enjoy myself in one.]

I guess that makes perfect sense- you don't want to fork out a fortune on one just to find you consider it an unpleasant experience, it's too much money to throw away. The problem is of course how infrequently these chances to try one come along- the only opportunity I have is at meets, and at the last one I went to, no-one even turned up with one, and even if they do there's no guarantee any of them will let you try theirs on.

Yep, chances are I'll never get to try a suit.

I once saw this website advertised on Fur Affinity, not sure if anyone might be interested:

http://mercurypale.com/jillcostumes/gallery.html (http://mercurypale.com/jillcostumes/gallery.html)

As for me, I tend to think fursuits might be a lot of fun, but maybe too expensive for me. I still haven't decided whether I should get one eventually or not. I'm worried that if I had one, I'd hardly ever use it! Still, sometimes I wish I could be more enthusiastic about the idea of fursuiting.

I don't know if that's true- at the very least you'll probably have a chance at CF at some point, even if it's only brief.

Kinda a hard thing to even ask someone about though given 1) how personal the suit is and 2) how expensive it is.

I can agree there actually. I'm very protective of my own stuff, and almost certainly would be about a fursuit. Like you say it's very personal (especially as my fursona is more than just a character to me), plus I wouldn't want it mistreated or damaged.

I have the same thoughts about getting a fursuit and hardly using it, but to attend one convention a year with it, it would be worth it.

Then there's the added bonus of sharing fursuit photos & videos online with others.

I could wear it for new year celebrations, Christmas etc, but only in the company of trusted friends.

all the talk of only using it once or at a con once a year. Just remember you will use it as much as you present yourself with oppertuninties to! If you only go one con a year and dont do anything else you can still use it at home or celebrations. Then theres meets and friends parties, mini cons etc or maybe you decided you enjoyed Cf so much you want to go to EF or AC There are honestly as many things to do in your suit as you can think of even down to as some suiters do occasionally doing charity work.

To answer Akinokaze too, its not really like wearing a hat (unless your suit has a hat to keep it on your head of course) its more like wearing a balaclava that doesnt quite touch your head like an inch away. I know what you mean about the tight feeling around yoru head with hats but really if you wear a hat for a while that feeling goes anyway. Its not so much the effect of having something around you than its the weight on your head but mostly the having your senses effected thats the bit to get over.

Currently still checking out fursuit suppliers and info including Furbid.

Saw one or two horrendous creations listed on Furbid.

And this lovely Angry-Otter by MixedCandy which is currently being auctioned on eBay.

Currently nearly £1000 with 17 hours left.

I take it that MixedCandy are one of the top fursuit makers, as I've read lots about them?

Yup, one of the best out there, but I think that auction is VERY expensive for a 2nd hand fursuit >.<

:o $1,876.11, thats probally more, or about the same ammount as when it was new, but then any thing by Latin Vixen always sells well.

A lot of well known makers will be fully booked up for ages, but if you have a good reference picture you can probably ask for quotes on the ukfur forums or on the livejournal fursuit auctions page:
http://community.livejournal.com/fursuitauctions/

There are a lot of up and coming US fursuit makers who are really quite cheap at the moment.

i know its a stupid question because i think i know the answer anyway... is it cheaper and much quicker to make your own suit?
i would have thought so as your going at your own pace and you can select materials your self but better to get someone elses opinion :)

Usually, it is a lot cheaper to make your own suit.
If you're artistically minded, usually you can do a better job of it than most. It's always worth giving it a go, if you don't like it, then you've not wasted much and you can always commission someone after anyway.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Furble  :)
i'll give it a go then but i think the head is guna most difficult for me although im not very artistically minded one of my friends sure is and shes agreed to helping me luckily ;)
besides most people are fully booked up for the next year so its worth giving it a go untill i can get someone to commission me one if needed :)

thanks again Furble *hugs*

came across your message - we're on that list (Kangena) and we have slots opening for commissions soon. We tend towards sculpting rather than carving (and so are expensive) but it depends what you're looking for. We also tend to do realistic suits rather than toons but we'd be quite happy to do a toon like suit if requested.

we're on facebook (search for Mandala Studios - we're the one with the pic of the polar bear) - if you want to see what we're up to from time to time (currently working on a cartoon mouse mascot and we're doing a step by step photo tutorial of how its being made  in case you fancy trying it yourself)

i know of a place that does a suit for around £400 + . you pay say 25% in advance and the rest in say 12 weeks. head for about £ 200 +.   indoor footpaws £ 50 up to £80. where is it  i know.and its in the midlands. cheaper than the internet.

Extra note for keeko, if you interested in building your own suit have a look on youtube theres plenty of videos showing how the more profesionals construct the bases for things like the heads so you can simply follow them as a guide. You do really need some equipment so its not without cost but its certainly a good 1.3rd the cost of having a profesional make a suit. Only problem for alot of uk suit makers is we arent blessed with such a range of high quality furs that say America are although theres some great sites willing to ship over to us for not too much money.
