Dealers Den & Art Auction / The Auction
« on: March 29, 2012, 22:02:43 »
I am annoyed to note that the thread has been locked preventing me making a reply.

I would not normally go against the wishes of forum moderators, but I do think I need to make a public statement on this... I meant "General Attendance" as in "This will be an event advertised in the con book as of general interest to all members of the convention" and that I would be surprised if everyone went in *expecting* uncensored adult content to be present.

The understanding I had after complaints were made after the last time, was that there would be no uncensored items *at all* in the event. Last time you made the decision that when rushed, and after mistakes in processing happened, you would go ahead and display uncensored adult art anyway. You were told that was something you should not have done. You were told not to do it again this year. Now you are saying you don't care, and if things get rushed, and mistakes happen in processing, you're going to display the uncensored adult art. And that there certainly will be uncensored adult art taken up to people in the audience who request it, with the blasé opinion stated that we should just avert our gaze if someone next to us decides they want a nice close look at that tentacle orgy poster.

This is unacceptable. ConCom are directly rebuffing the complaints we made about this last year! It makes too many people uncomfortable, and will turn some people off from going to it at all. Frankly, I won't be going to it if this attitude is taken, because I think adult art shouldn't be pushed on those who feel uncomfortable about it.

I'm not sure I understand the objection to censoring adult art in a general attendance event, or asking it to be segregated into the last portion of the auction. It's won't remove that art from bidding, and I don't see how it would reduce the amount of money raised. It may well increase because people who avoid adult art may be more willing to attend and bid.

Also, I want to make it clear, James is not 'one individual'. I share his opinion on this, and I would be surprised if it was just the two of us. Additionally, I had assumed from previous comments that the Art Auction was going to be censored or have Adult Art segregated this year because of complaints raised last year, and I am entirely surprised at this announcement that Adult Art may be presented un-censored in the middle of a general attendance event.

If the person presenting it for the auction can't censor it in time for the auction, it should not go in the auction. It's that simple and how pretty much every other fandom convention does it.

You could perhaps arrange a reading of a short fanfiction?  Can't imagine there's any issues with that, and there's some excellent material out there :)

Fanfiction tends to make me twitchy, I had a bad experience at a con once where someone cornered me at the buffet breakfast and told me all about their Reboot fanfic... But I have no objection, so long as I am given sufficient time to flee the room gibbering.

I should be arriving at Hinckley railway station late afternoon on the 24th myself... And I would strongly suggest getting a taxi. If you share one, it shouldn't be that expensive.

Ah well...

Would there be any problem showing the Fair-Use Parody series "Friendship is Witchcraft"?

A limit to physical media does limit it to basically one of the three episodes released on DVD. And I don't have a portable R1 DVD player anyway, so that makes it moot. The series is only available 'to own' otherwise via iTunes downloads to a US account, and I understand it if you'd rather not take the legal issues of showing those. It's mainly watched via Hasbro's 'The Hub' TV channel and their on-line streaming site, and that's a nest of legal issues and practical ones to access too.

Unfortunately, other than grey-market-imports, the only 'legally licensed distribution' of the show in the UK is a single mid-week mid-afternoon showing on 'Boomerang' who are sitting on the UK rights. Hasbro made the epic mistake of selling the R2 distribution rights to a company with competing toys in the UK market.

To clarify, the only way I'll be able to show an episode then, is if you're okay with my showing iTunes downloads "imported" from a US account.

Announcements / Re: ConFuzzled 2012 Events Schedule - Sneak Preview!

Fair enough. A last call for event volunteers (and a e-mail out to all current ones so we know what's going on) might still be a good idea before you finalise the schedule.

Might be a really good idea to post a big obvious notice on the front page of the website, on LJ and a sticky on the forums that if you want an event to happen, now is the time to volunteer to run it and ask for a room and time or it won't happen. The current schedule looks a little heavy on people volunteering to be DJs, and very light on people volunteering to run events. I think part of that is I wouldn't have known you want people to mail a specific address to get a room and time allocated had I not had a reply to my brony-meet thread, because most people have just been posting in the forums about events they'd like to do.

Please put something up in the various public places making a last call for event volunteers, and making it clear how to get an event at CFZ.

If I can show one of the episodes, which one would you lot like to see? Right now, I'm leaning in the direction of either of "Winter Wrap Up" or "May The Best Pet Win!"

This happened unofficially at the last CFZ anyway, but it might be nice to assign a room and time for one!

I would probably suggest the Rotundra serves up the best space for something like this in that it is rather picturesqu.  Outside there is the lake as well, which might be nice, but there isnt much walk around space unfortunately, it is mostly car park and road.

Most people will have to enter the ground floor of the Rotunda to get to their hotel rooms, so you might have problems filming there for long stretches without people in the way. You might be better with filming from the balconies of the Rotunda, since you should be able to block off one segment of it if you really needed to.

I own two fursuits by Qarrezel and will be bringing them both to Confuzzled this year:

Ngala

Will be nice to see you again! Having helped Taran around MCM last October, I can tell you this suit is even better than the photo makes it look... We couldn't walk ten meters on the convention centre floor without stopping for a "Can I take a photo?".

As a webcomic creator, can I interest you in the "Webcomics Kaffee Klatch" event I'm putting together? (I'm a subs editor on the Belfry Index)

It occurs to me, that depending on technical feasibility, I could also see if any of my US webcomics making friends would like to Skype in to say hi and answer some questions...

Not sure how many people will come along to a Kaffe Klatch on webcomics. We had around 20ish for Gneech's "how to make a webcomic" panel, and I would be okay with getting only half of that. I do know of some creators who might turn up (and one hopefully definite), and I would be happy to help encourage those who want to start one.
